Prerequisiti: Basic knowledge of silviculture system and economics of forest resources. Also a basic knowledge on GIS analysis is suggested.
Conoscenze e abilita' da acquisire: The students will acquire the basic concepts and practices of timber exploitation within the context of managing forest resources and ecosystems sustainability. The students will be able to understand the timber harvesting process and explain interactions between logging, roads and transport systems both in close-to nature forest as in plantation forest. Again the students will be able to understand the linkages between timber harvesting and other aspects of natural resource management and components of the wood supply chain. Also the students will acquire basic concepts to evaluate and synthesize environmental and economic aspects of specific operating environments to determine and describe appropriate harvesting technology and mitigating measures to reduce timber harvesting impacts.
Modalita' di esame: The examination consists in a presentation of a case study chosen by the student. The case study structure should include: the description of the logging site including also the aims of the logging operation, the identification of the wood products, the identification of the logging system, the technical and economic analysis and the evaluation of the environmental impacts.
Criteri di valutazione: Students will be evaluated on the ability and the knowledge acquired through the course and on the capacity to apply appropriate methodologies of analysis to the case study.
Contenuti: The sustainable forest exploitation through a reduced impact of forest harvesting means appropriate planning and high capacity to evaluate forest harvesting operations.
The course is subdivided in 4 Parts:
Part 1: basic technology knowledge of logging operation and wood transportation
Part 2: basic knowledge on forest road network analysis
Part 3: basic concepts to evaluate and synthesize technical and economic aspects of the wood exploitation
Part 4: basic concepts to evaluate and synthesize environmental aspects of the wood exploitation
Attivita' di apprendimento previste e metodologie di insegnamento: The course will consist in frontal lectures and in laboratory activities (GIS and decision analysis based on spreadsheet models) during which they analyze technical and operational issues of different forest exploitation systems.
Field trips and practical activities are planned in the Alps
Eventuali indicazioni sui materiali di studio: The content of the course is not fully covered by a single text book. The teaching materials is based on: (i) lecture notes, (ii) Scientific papers provided during the lectures, (iii) Technical books
The lecturing material is available at (Moodle Platform of the Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine School)
The teacher receives students by appointment via e-mail
