Syllabus
Prerequisiti: According to the CEF , Common European Framework of References for Languages of the Council of Europe, the students must have achieved the B1 level in Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing Skills.
Conoscenze e abilita' da acquisire: By the end of the course, the students will have an Advanced Knowledge of English (B2 Level), with a particular focus on the conventions of Scientific Academic English and on the language of dentistry. They will apply the knowledge they have acquired to understand and produced scientific texts, both orally and in written form. They will also be able to further develop their language skills autonomously.
Modalita' di esame: Written tests on subjects explained during the academic lectures.
Criteri di valutazione: Evaluation will be based on formal correctness (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation) and communicative skills (ability to produce and understand complex texts in English both oral and written).Active class participation will be taken into account for the final grade.
Contenuti: 1. The importance of English in the international medical literature.
2. The most efficient search engines to recover validated medical information.
3. Correct consultation modalities for Medical Research.
4. How to organize a scientific paper (in English)…
5. Methods of medical literature review.
6. A practical exercise. A brief literature review:
7. How to properly cite a scientific literature source and prepare an adequate bibliography.
8. How to correctly present a “Case report” format.
9. Preliminary information. Odontogenic deep neck infections.
10. A practical exercise. Preparation of a “case report” format after the discussion of a case of deep neck infection in a 15-year-old patient.
11. The importance of title, abstract and keywords in medical papers.
12. How to write a good abstract for a scientific paper.
13. The importance of figures and tables in medical papers.
14. How to choose a target international journal to submit a contribution.
15. A practical exercise: selection of the main concepts to prepare an abstract from a scientific medical paper. Group and individual discussion of the contents.
16. A practical exercise: draw up a proper title and find the keywords for international medical abstracts.
17. A practical exercise: drafting an abstract from an international scientific paper regarding oral/maxillofacial surgery. Group and individual discussion of the contents.
Attivita' di apprendimento previste e metodologie di insegnamento: The course will cover the following topics:-Words from general English with a special meaning in dentistry-Academic English grammar at B2 level_ Understanding lectures and making notes _Expanding notes into complex sentences-Summarizing texts-Paraphrasing -The use of connectors_ Fixed phrases from Dentistry and Academic English-Recognizing the speaker’s stance-Building an argument –Agreeing/disagreeing. Lectures, small –groups work, exercises.
