Syllabus
Prerequisiti: Knowledge of general and agricultural Entomology
Conoscenze e abilita' da acquisire: The course will provide knowledge on the various concepts involved in the development and application of IPM strategies. Target skills are: utilize critical thinking principles for pest management decision-making aimed at the conjugation of environmental compatibility, production efficiency, economic viability, and social responsibility; apply current pest management principles to crop production and situations where pest management is critical.
Modalita' di esame: One final exam. A term project will be assigned to students and will count in the final course grade.
Criteri di valutazione: Written exam will assess the degree of knowledge on the topics presented during the lectures; Term project will evaluate critical analysis skills, and the creativity in pest management implementation;
Contenuti: This course will deal with current strategies of biological and integrated control of arthropod pests on key agricultural crops. The first part of the course will focus on ecological and economics concepts involved in pest control, the second on the most promising tools in pest management tactics.
Attivita' di apprendimento previste e metodologie di insegnamento: 1st Credit: Introduction to IPM; definition of Integrated Pest Management and historical perspectives: from pest control to pest management.
2nd Credit: Ecological and economic concepts in IPM
Biological units, trophic structures and food web ecology. Population dynamics and life history theory. Productivity, yield loss, Pest management and profit maximization, Economic thresholds.
3rd Credit: IPM in the field
Monitoring strategies, pest’s distribution and abundance assessment, sampling procedure, monitoring and forecasting, decision support systems.
4th Credit: Pest management tactics I
Concepts and methods of biological control, classical biological control, augmentative and conservation biological control
5th Credit: Pest management tactics II
Cultural control (preventive measures, sanitation, soil management), biotechnics
6th Credit: Pest management tactics III
Toxicology and ecotoxicology of pesticides, legislation
There will be 48 contact hours. The course will comprise front lectures with slides presentation, laboratory sessions and seminars. Reading of the class textbook, of material and other references provided by instructor will be associated to the lectures. During the course laboratory sessions (about 16 hours) will be dedicated to a practical presentation of IPM tools and their use. Laboratory sessions will comprise field visits.
