Conoscenze e abilita' da acquisire: Students learn strategies for genomic analysis by exploring DNA sequencing technology, comparative genomics, sequence variation, genome expression and genome evolution. Students extend these foundational principles to explore sequenced genomes, gene families, gene expression and function. Students also learn applications of advanced statistical tools to perform genome-wide association studies and genomic-aided prediction aimed at identifying chromosomal regions associated with Mendelian traits and QTLs useful for marker-assisted breeding.
Modalita' di esame: Written test and Oral examination.
Criteri di valutazione: The final exam, linked to the official course, will consist of a halfway written test and a final oral examination: the former will count for 40% of the final mark whereas the latter for 60%. To pass the exam, students need to get a final mark equal to or greater than 18/30.
Contenuti: The course examines the DNA genotyping, fingerprinting and sequencing technologies which allow the understanding of structural genomics: the organization, evolution and expression of genes. Successful application of genomics to plant and animal improvement requires merging knowledge about how genomic information is generated to the practice of breeding, disciplines which may emphasize different aspects of the relationships between genotype and phenotype. Knowledge of available statistical tools and their application to exploit genomic data in identification of genomic regions associated with Mendelian traits and QTLs of interest and in practical selective breeding by means of marker-assisted selection (MAB). This course intends to bridge this gap by focusing content on recent research explaining how current genomic biology and advanced statistical tools impact key elements of the plant/animal improvement process: characterizing and assembling genetic variation, evaluation of phenotypes and identification of superior genotypes through genome-wide association studies and molecular marker-based selection procedures.
Attivita' di apprendimento previste e metodologie di insegnamento: The course program contains four main parts and deals with the study of structural genomics, functional genomics, comparative genomics and methodologies useful to get the key of understanding and developing genomic tools and molecular markers for crop and animal improvement. The course is delivered through lectures and exercises on the basic tools for genome and gene analyses.

Genomics is a rapidly moving and dynamic field that has blossomed during the last years. Although a number of recent textbooks are available that cover some course topics, many of the genomic applications to plant and animal improvement continue to evolve. Thus, a collection of recently published articles in scientific journals will be the primary source of course content, which are available through the course website.
