Degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Padova in 1979.
Researcher in 1983.
Associate Professor of Applied Chemistry in 1987.
Full Professor of Materials Science and Technology in 2000.
President of the Degree in Materials Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, from 2001 to February 2008.
Has been member of the Scientific Council of the Consorzio Interuniversitario Veneto per le Nanotecnologie (CIVEN).
Has been member of the Managing Board of the Associazione Italiana d’Ingegneria dei Materiali.
Member of the Steering Committee of the Doctorate School in Materials Science and Engineering. Member of the International Board of the International Sol-Gel Society.
Member of the Academic Senate of the University of Padova.
Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Sol-Gel Science and Technology.
Member of the Administration Council of Parco Scientifico e Tecnologico Galileo.
Chairman of the ICG (International Commission on Glass) Technical Committee TC 12 "Pharma Packaging".
Author or co-author of more than 270 publications, most in peer-reviewed Journals. Co-editor and chapter author of the book "Sol-Gel Nanocomposites", in the Series Advances in Sol-Gel Derived Materials and Technologies edited by Springer.

Awards
Awarded in 1992 with the "Professor Vittorio Gottardi Memorial Prize" by the International Commission on Glass in recognition of his outstanding individual accomplishments in the field of glass.

Aree di ricerca
Main topics of research have been:
1. Surface phenomena in glasses due to chemically or physically induced modifications.
2. Synthesis of glasses and ceramics by chemical routes through sol-gel method, their characterisation and application.
3. Deposition of thin inorganic coatings by the sol-gel method, their characterisation and application.
The research activity of the last years was aimed to exploit the possibility to apply the sol-gel techniques to the synthesis of nanocomposite and nanostructured materials. In particular, two main topics have been developed: a) the synthesis of nanoparticles and their embedding in porous matrices for sensing applications; b) the synthesis of hybrid organic-inorganic materials as host matrices for functional molecules and as functional resists for nanopatterning applications.
