Syllabus
Prerequisiti: Previous knowledge of ecology, forest botany and silviculture are highly recommended.
Conoscenze e abilita' da acquisire: Students will be provided with a thorough foundation in concepts and practices of forest and natural resource management plans. A portion of the course is devoted to the development of information to support stand-level and forest-level management planning processes. In this regard, commonly used ecological criteria for assessing the value and relative differences between plans of action at both the stand and forest landscape levels will be learned by the students. At the forest landscape level, the students will learn how to develop traditional commodity production forest plans as well as to develop forest plans containing biodiversity conservation goals.
Modalita' di esame: Short essay written questions and oral short questions.
Criteri di valutazione: a) Knowledge of relevant theoretical and conceptual frameworks; b) ability to apply theoretical/conceptual understandings to a given question; c) ability to structure and organise material in a time constrained situation/environment; d) ability to present ideas/opinions coherently with reference to models and frameworks as appropriate.
Contenuti: Description of the management planning process. Development of information necessary for valuing and characterizing forest conditions. Physical and ecological methods for valuing and characterizing forest conditions. Overview of geographic databases and the methods used to estimate and project conditions into the future. Tree- and stand- level optimization techniques. Models of desired forest structure. Control techiques to move forests to a desired structure. Hierarchy of planning processes.
Attivita' di apprendimento previste e metodologie di insegnamento: The teaching includes: indoor and outdoor lectures and laboratories. The indoor lectures make use of digital presentations and videos. Moreover, several scientific and technical papers which deal with forest land use and its configuration will be discussed.
