Syllabus
Prerequisiti: Students should have knowledge of basic plant biology, ecology, and soil science. Knowledge of forest sciences is an advantage.
Conoscenze e abilita' da acquisire: Students completing this course will gain appreciation of the major drivers of change in structure and function of forests in Mediterranean regions – such as climate, fire, harvesting, other uses - and the biological processes that underpin such changes. Students will be introduced to measurement and modeling methods, frameworks and approaches that can be used to integrate the numerous drivers of change, at a range of scales.
Modalita' di esame: The final mark will be made up of a formal written exam (1 hr), a project report, an oral presentation, and class participation.
Criteri di valutazione: Participation: active attitude in lectures and during practical exercises.
Project report: relevance, good conceptual framework, absence of relevant conceptual errors, overall consistency and coordination, matching of objectives with conclusions, presence of an appropriate literature review, awareness of problems and critical approach.
Oral presentation: knowledge of the topic, capacity to present and discuss the topic in a critical way, place topic in correct context.
Exam: concise answer to questions, accuracy, comprehension of the topic
Contenuti: The course has key components:
1. Structure and function of woody plants in Mediterranean climates. There is a focus on leaves as sites for exchanges of carbon and water with the atmosphere. Students will gain first-hand experience in measurement of gas exchange.
2. Structure and nature (e.g. species composition, soils) of forests in Mediterranean climates, and how these are studied at difference scales – catchments, regional, continental scales.
3. Introduction to the problems/issues associated with scaling from the leaf and/or plant, to the ecosystem.
4. Characteristics of Mediterranean forests – drought, radiation, temperature, fire.
5. Introduction to forest management under Mediterranean conditions.
6. Use of models and modeling to predict outcomes of management and of changes in climate for attributes such as carbon sequestration, water yield, nutrient requirements.
Attivita' di apprendimento previste e metodologie di insegnamento: Three different teaching methods are employed. Most material will be introduced first via lectures. Tutorials will be used to develop concepts and ideas through prescribed readings. Practical exercises and computer laboratory exercises in modeling will be used to add depth to student understanding of key concepts, and to provide students with tools for further use beyond the course.
