Syllabus
Prerequisiti: Students must have basic knowledge of Natural Resources management; particularly expose to: Forestry, Agriculture, Food production and processing, and to general policy & economic principles is welcome.
(some support material and readings are already available at: https://elearning.unipd.it/scuolaamv/course/view.php?id=1312) and will be further expanded prior and during the course.
Conoscenze e abilita' da acquisire: The course aims at providing knowledge and competences on the role and potentialities of Non Wood Forest Products and services in general and for European forests and the Mediterranean areas in particular at different institutional scales: international, national and local. Drivers for Policy and Market development for non wood products are reviewed, as well as the roles of public and private stakeholders. Finally, key policy and marketing tools for enhancing the value chains for NWFP and services are presented and discussed.
Modalita' di esame: The final mark is made up of three components: a) class participation including field excursion; b) individual/team project work presentation; c) written exam. Weight of the three components a,b,c is respectively 15%, 35% and 50% .
Criteri di valutazione: Participation: active attitude in lectures and during class exercises; individual project work: relevance (connection with module topics), good conceptual framework, absence of relevant conceptual errors, overall consistency and coordination, matching of objectives with conclusions, presence of detailed literature review, awareness of problems and critical approach, accuracy in quotations. Written exam: knowledge of the topics, capacity to present and discuss them in a critical way, to place them in the correct context and to understand logic relationships with other topics of the course and, in general, with the other disciplines.
Contenuti: The course comprises of three sub-modules
1. Introduction and inter-disciplinary context setting for developing NWFP policies and markets.
2. NWFP Policy development: characteristics and socio-economic and environmental drivers, impact of/on forest resources and products at (inter-) national – regional - local scales; general features of policy development, monitoring and compliance; introduction to production and trade policy mechanisms.
3. NWFP Market development: characterization of NWFP markets, stakeholders and value chains; introduction to: NWFP Value chain analyses, review of key production, processing and trade aspects for major NWFP; NWFP marketing; certification; developing business and product branding plans.
Attivita' di apprendimento previste e metodologie di insegnamento: Teaching and learning methods are twofold between class lectures given by a team of renowned experts in their respective fields and by class discussions of student based work exercises. First, the main topics are presented through lectures (ppt presentations, videos), followed by reviewing class and field visit based student work. Class work includes use of online data bank, data processing, individual case-study presentation and analysis followed by discussion in class.
